The New River, a tributary of the Kanawha River, is approximately 320 mi (515 km) long, flowing through the states of North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia in the United States. Much of the river's course through West Virginia is designated as the New River Gorge National River. The New River is one of the American Heritage Rivers of the United States. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New River (Kanawha River)
I've only recently moved to Roanoke and have tried to fish the New a few times. I'm reasonably new to river fishing and have not got the knack of it yet. I will probably hire a guide this spring to teach me the ropes.
The New River has great smallie fishing throughout VA.The upper New has lots of fish but dose not have the numbers or the size of the lower New but is still good fishing. You can pull bigger fish out of the upper but they are a little harder to come by.
The ranking score is used to determine how "popular" a trip or location is. It is calculated based off of a weighted average of the number of reviews and the user ratings. For example, a location with 2 reviews and an average rating of 5 will have a lower "ranking score" than one with 10 reviews and an average rating of 4. This is because even though the first location has a better average rating, it has not been reviewed as much as the second location, so it is not as "popular". In the future we may modify the ranking score to take in additional factors, such as the number of views, comments, and photos.
